Merrett Houmøller are an award winning, design led practice focussing on creating sustainable, practical and beautiful architecture which responds to the needs of the users. We delight in transforming tired buildings into light filled, modern, healthy spaces.
Our projects tend to be London based but we also work further afield and are particularly partial to a rural project.
We have extensive knowledge and experience of sustainability and do not think of it as an ‘add on’ to think about at the final stages of design. We take a practical approach to it however, and try to manage what is often a conflict between budget and the sustainable credentials of a project. Wherever possible we take simple steps to use materials with low embodied carbon, without adding to the overall cost - for example by substituting the use of concrete blocks with timber frame, or clay block construction.
We ask clients to commit however to at least one ‘new’ sustainable element which goes beyond the norm in construction for their project. This may be using natural insulation, or minimising the use of plasterboard by using timber instead, or installing solar panels or a heat pump - each project is different.
For us, each project is individual and client focused, with an emphasis on working with clients as a collaboration, rather than for clients. As such our work is representative of the needs and wants of the end users, rather than believing we should impose a type of architecture upon them.
